What it is and what it's based on
The "marriage visa" is a variant of the Non-O that rests on a single fact: being legally married to a Thai citizen. The marriage has to be properly registered, and from there a stable residence route opens up, built for people making a family life there.
The requirements
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Relationship | Registered marriage with a Thai national |
| Funds (either one) | ฿400,000 (~€10,500) in a Thai bank · or ฿40,000/month (~€1,050) |
| Official fee | ≈ €70 |
| Duration | 1 year, renewable indefinitely |
| Obligations | 90-day report + re-entry permit when leaving |
The financial requirement is notably lower than that of the retirement Non-O (which asks for ฿800,000 or ฿65,000/month): marriage "lowers the bar" on solvency. The exact amounts and the required seasoning of the deposit can vary, so confirm them at the time.
The big advantage: working
Here's what makes this route special. With the marriage visa, getting a work permit is more accessible: the requirements for the company hiring you are more flexible than under the ordinary Non-B. Same caveat as always: the visa is not the permit. Being married makes the permit easier to get, but you need both to work.
The recurring obligations
- 90-day report: like any long-stay visa, you have to notify immigration of your address every 90 days — covered in this renewals guide.
- Re-entry permit: if you leave the country, you need this permit so the visa doesn't expire when you come back. Forgetting it means starting from scratch.
- Annual renewal: keeping the marriage and the funds in place, it renews with no limit on years.
Where Bexpat fits in
We're a relocation agency, not a family law firm: if your route is marriage, we guide you on the visa fit and set up the rest of the move — apartment, first steps — coordinating with whoever handles the legal side. And if your case isn't marriage but you're not sure which one it is, the visa test points you in the right direction in a minute.
Frequently asked questions
What are the requirements?
Registered marriage with a Thai national and showing ฿400,000 (~€10,500) in a Thai bank or ฿40,000/month (~€1,050). Fee ≈ €70, one renewable year.
Can I work with it?
The visa alone doesn't authorize work: you also need a work permit. The advantage is that, married to a Thai national, that permit is more accessible than other routes.
How often does it renew?
One renewable year, indefinitely, as long as the marriage and the funds hold. It requires the 90-day report and a re-entry permit if you leave the country.
