Real island life

Samui is big enough to have everything — private hospitals, international schools, supermarkets that stock jamón — and small enough that within three months you'll know half the island. You get here by plane or ferry, and that filter changes everything: whoever is here chose to be here. The result is a community of families, wellness people and young retirees that's easy to break into.

The wellness scene isn't brochure posturing: yoga retreats, muay thai gyms, healthy food on every corner, and neighbouring Koh Phangan's detox festival a 30-minute ferry ride away. If your life plan includes taking care of yourself, few islands in the world make it this easy.

What it costs to live

Expensive for a gulf island, cheaper than Phuket. Budget for one person to live well, at 2026 prices (38 ฿ per euro). What really changes from one profile to another is rent; everything else stays similar however you live. These are the same numbers the calculator gives you:

Monthly budget in Koh Samui for one person, tight profile and living well
Each monthTightLiving well
Rent (35 m² studio, Mae Nam vs. condo with pool)10,940 ฿15,200 ฿

Leisure and travel15,080 ฿15,080 ฿
Total≈ 1.240 €≈ 1.350 €

A luxury place (villa or premium condo) pushes the total up to about 1.570 €; everything else barely moves.

Island trick: 6-12 month contracts get negotiated at a 10-20% discount over the month-to-month price — here, most of the housing stock flirts with holiday rentals, and stability is rewarded well. Your specific case, in the calculator.

With kids: schools

For its size, Samui is surprisingly well served: International School of Samui, PBISS, Lamai International and a few smaller options. Real range: from 90,000 ฿ for early years to 300,000-550,000 ฿ for secondary per year (2,400-14,500 €) — noticeably cheaper than Bangkok or Phuket. Many wellness families enrol their kids here without a hitch. Full comparison in the guide to moving with kids.

Healthcare on the island

Bangkok Hospital Samui, Samui International and Thai International cover emergencies, maternity and day-to-day needs. For anything complex, the usual route is flying to Bangkok (1h10) — and here insurance matters more than it does on the mainland, because a medical evacuation without cover runs into thousands of euros. From 40-60 €/month when young; the detail in the healthcare and insurance guide.

Bexpat tip: on the islands, get insurance before getting on a scooter, not after the first scare. Most expat accidents in Samui involve scooters, and private hospitals ask for a card before treating you. It's the one line in the budget you don't cut.

Getting around and arriving

The ring road around the island is 50 km: a scooter (≈ 3,000 ฿/month) or a car, plus the songthaews that circle the coast. The island's own airport (USM) is a blessing with an asterisk: it's privately run, by Bangkok Airways, and flights cost more than to any other destination in the country. The cheap route is flying to Surat Thani and crossing by ferry, at the cost of 4-5 extra hours of travel.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Small, tight-knit expat community: you land with company.
  • Real wellness scene: yoga, retreats, muay thai, healthy food.
  • Own airport, 1h10 from Bangkok.
  • International schools cheaper than Bangkok/Phuket.
  • Its monsoon (Oct-Dec) leaves the rest of the year dry.

Cons

  • Expensive flights: the airport is privately run.
  • Pricey for an island; Phuket-lite in cost too.
  • Dependent on ferries for anything that doesn't fly.
  • Healthcare good for the day-to-day, Bangkok for anything serious.
  • November is quite wet.

Is Koh Samui for you?

Yes, if you're after island life with a safety net: community, wellness and enough services to stay for years. If you need more city and more hospital, Bangkok; if you want a bigger island with more services, Phuket; and if what you're after is a quiet beach without a boat involved, Hua Hin.

Frequently asked questions

How much do I need per month?

To live well, around 1.350 € for one person (condo with pool, food, transport, insurance and leisure). On a tighter budget it drops to ~1.240 €; a villa in Bophut or Choeng Mon pushes it up to ~1.570 € or more. What moves is rent; everything else barely does.

When does it rain in Samui?

The reverse of Phuket: the heavy monsoon runs from October to December, with November as the worst month. From January to September the climate is dry and stable — which is why many Andaman residents move over to Samui for exactly those months.

How do you get there from Spain?

Fly to Bangkok and connect to Samui (USM), 1h10. The airport is privately run and flights cost more than to Phuket. The cheap route: fly to Surat Thani and take the ferry, 4-5 hours longer.
