The three seasons
Thailand is tropical, so there's no European cold anywhere: the variable isn't temperature, it's rain and humidity. Broadly:

The monsoon's asterisk is key, because it doesn't fall at the same time across the whole country. That's where the trick is.
The two coasts: Andaman vs Gulf
It's Thailand's best climate secret and almost nobody uses it well. The two coasts have the monsoon in different months:
- Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi): monsoon from May to October.
- Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan): a later monsoon, from October to December (November, the worst).
Translation: when it's raining in Phuket, it's usually good weather in Samui, and vice versa. Many island residents switch coasts for their bad season. With the freedom to move around, in Thailand you can chase good weather almost all year.
The north's asterisk: smoke season
The big thing to know before choosing Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai. From February to April, agricultural burning fills the valley with smoke and the air quality index frequently tops 150–200. People with young children or respiratory issues have a rough time; many residents leave for the south or the islands during those weeks. The rest of the year, the north has the best climate in the country — cool 15–25°C nights from November to February.

Nailing the month isn't mandatory — life matters more than the weather — but if you can choose, landing in the good season makes the first months, which already bring plenty of hustle, much easier to handle.
